Overcoming

Last weekend I filled the final page of my journal, an enormously satisfying feeling, so I popped down to the art store to get my next one. Paralysis quickly hit, what would I paint on the first page?? It had to be just right, something impactful!

It’s curious why my mind put that pressure on me, “the first page had to be perfect!”, the voice said. Thankfully my sensibility took over and I just picked something in my backyard to paint. Which I’m so happy about. For the next year or so as I fill these pages, I will smile at my happy mushrooms. Remembering the unnecessary pressure I had put on myself to make it perfect. And how when I stopped thinking that way, when I got out of my own way, I got a result that made me smile.

If these mushrooms made you smile then maybe you want to join us tomorrow for wild mushroom nature journaling class. We will be in the garden under the tent. We may even find some mushrooms in the garden to paint!

What are Little Moments you say? This is a once weekly newsletter that I hope is a small nudge or ounce of motivation for you to get outside and observe the natural world. It doesn't have to be grandiose, a small leaf on the ground, an interesting rock, anything you notice that you pay enough attention to casually sketch it or paint it in a journal. All the Little Moments add up to a life lived more observantly, grounded in the natural world.
