Hummingbird Times - Wartime Edition

The Broadbill Brigade has advanced into new territory.

Every morning, I sit in my living room to watch the sunrise. Our house faces east, and, in the summertime, I open both slider doors to let in the cool morning air. One morning this past week, a curious hummingbird flew right in and hovered in the middle of the room. My thoughts immediately went to how difficult it was going to be to get this bird out of the house, recalling a past incidence of myself with a broom and my husband and son waving their arms frantically to try and usher out a frighten finch. But before I got up, the hummingbird flew right back out the door. Just a few seconds later he came back in and took a big sweeping turn to fly right out the other open slider door. The curiosity and confidence of this bird were impressive. I don't know if he was looking for flowers or maybe some new territory to defend. Either way, it definitely made me smile.

The next morning, I saw another hummingbird, maybe the same one, come right up to the open door but turned to fly away. That's probably for the best, I don't need the hummingbird wars coming into my house. They cause enough ruckus outside.

Next Sunday is the last outdoor nature journaling class for the season. This one will be held at Buffalo Park where we'll focus on all the beautiful sunflowers. I'd love to see you there, sign up here: Nature Journaling - Buffalo Park.

Lastly, I will be starting up another Nature Journaling series back at the museum's Discovery Village on August 24. These classes are more focused on specific drawing and painting techniques. This season I have Wild Mushrooms, Birds, Mini Landscapes, and Fall Leaves as topics. The first two classes will be held in the Colton Garden, under the tent. Nature Journaling - Late Summer 2025

What are Little Moments you say? This is a once weekly newsletter that I hope is a small nudge or ounce of motivation for you to get outside and observe the natural world. It doesn't have to be grandiose, a small leaf on the ground, an interesting rock, anything you notice that you pay enough attention to casually sketch it or paint it in a journal. All the Little Moments add up to a life lived more observantly, grounded in the natural world.
